Oak longship

This design was inspired by the form created by a large slice of timber from a large, old, Worcestershire oak tree. The irregular shape of the material meant that it was not suitable to create a flat slab normally required for working, however, the natural shape of the wood has a solemn beauty that became the inspiration for this piece. ​A steel cradle was hand constructed to wrap around and support the solid oak mass and is intended to resemble the keel and rib structure of a Viking longship .
